I’d like to share two new videos with you.  The first is the landing of space shuttle Discovery at the Kennedy Space Center atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft on September 21st, complete with coworker commentary.  The second is Lorenia, convincing me we need a pack of eight assorted specialty scissors.  Enjoy.

Walking on the moon

via WIRED

Ever watch those old videos and wonder why the Apollo astronauts developed a loping gait when walking on the moon?  Turns out the spacesuit, being inflated like a balloon, helped support its own 220-pound weight.  The internal pressure also made it difficult to bend the joints of the suit.  When the knee did bend, however, it would spring back, providing an extra pep in each step.  This combined with the low lunar gravity meant that the transition speed (the point where humans break into a run from walking) for a suited Apollo astronaut was much lower on the moon.  Hence the moonwalkers skipped, bounced and loped across the lunar surface at speeds where we earth-bound humans would simply stride.  With any luck this discovery will be brought to bear on the design of Martian spacesuits.

BONUS:  I just realized the music video for the Police’s Walking on the Moon was shot on location here at the Kennedy Space Center, back when the unused Saturn V rocket was on display outside the VAB, rusting away until it was restored and placed in a dedicated museum down the road.

Just in case you were wondering where I’ve disappeared to lately, here’s a quick recap:

I spend half my time in Florida testing, fixing, and launching shuttles, and the other half in Houston helping to design the GNC systems for the new Orion vehicle.

It’s a sweet gig.  I ain’t complainin’.

This new MacBook Pro ain’t too shabby either.

All bragging aside, I checked my voicemail today and had 20 messages.  In my defense, they aren’t showing up in my inbox.  I need to give Verizon a call and have that fixed.  My gmail inbox is below 100 unread messages, and that’s good.  I get around 40 work emails a day, so when I fall behind, it’s bad.  If I haven’t gotten back to you, I apologize.  Life’s going to be busy for at least the next couple of years.

Discovered via Devon’s entry on soulpancake.  More on Oren Lavie here.  Funny that among his predecessors is Leonard Cohen.

The Golden Eleven

I’ve been agonizing over this list since October. The instructions are simple: choose your eleven favorite musical artists, then your favorite song by each, and provide a link so the world can share in the crème de la crème of your musical tastes. This list is probably different than your eleven favorite songs, which is why you choose the artists first. I found this process singularly difficult. I’m tempted to create a second list of honorable mentions, because there is far too much amazing music out there to be content with such a small sampling. Futhermore, when you consider that what makes an artist your favorite is that they have many songs that you love, the exercise in choosing one among their repertoire is made that much more maddening. Still, since this is a meme of my creation, I will adhere strictly to it. I give you: my golden eleven.

11. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Mary Jane’s Last Dance

10. Cake – Opera Singer

9. Metric – Dead Disco

8. Pixies – Hey

7. Spoon – Me and the Bean

6. Zero 7 – Destiny

5. Feist – Gatekeeper

4. Elliott Smith – Independence Day

3. Portishead – Humming

2. Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien

1. Beck – Deadweight

Let’s dance

last night met David Bowie
in future New York City
he said, “Hey man
wanna see my pad?”

felt like a suffragette
face in elevator chrome
got off at twenty-seven
the view on top so rad

private island high rise
I spied the streets below
I had my baby’s camera
to shoot the passing scene

out into the lobby
escorted by the duke
asian paparazzi
then crashed my little dream

how odd it must be for him
to deal with all the fame
for just a little stardust
the people scream and yell

elbow to the window
ignoring all the din
I zoom on things below
to see what tales they tell

a traffic jam with police
directing all the flow
I couldn’t time the shot right
being jostled at the glass

finally I got it
the next moment I awoke
two cops, a jumping high-five
now that’s a dream with class

Deep blue

In spite of childhood swim lessons in frigid water at the crack of dawn (or perhaps because of them), I have always been a waterbaby.  In the past six months I’ve made rapid progress in scuba diving, beyond PADI certified rescue diver into specialties like wreck penetration diving.  Lately I’ve become obsessed with the geology and location of blue holes, occuring in equatorial karst regions throughout the Caribbean and across the globe, ranging from the cenotes of Mexico to the springs of Florida to the blue holes of the Bahamas, Belize, and the Red Sea.  In exploring online what I hope to someday explore in person, I ran across this video and was entranced.  If you can’t see yourself doing this, then imagine you were along with Lorenia today, as she swam in the azure waters off the Yucatan with massive sea turtles and giant whale sharks, exploring undersea caves and catching rides from 12-foot wide manta rays.

Shout outs to my family in the Big Apple.  Nas, Greg, thank you so much for hosting me.  Naseem, congratulations on graduating law school!  You know I wish you all the best in your bright future.  Word to ‘toosa, Temi, Balazs, and all the cool kids I met on this beautiful weekend full of friends, food, fun and games.  Toufan, Mike, sorry I missed you guys.  Next time I might know I’m coming sooner than four days before arriving.  To everyone else, thanks again for another amazing time in the City of the Covenant.  Here’s a clip of pedestrians on the Brooklyn Bridge.  This weekend marks my first time to make that fabled crossing.
